The more things change
vs   Not many people talk about the band Midlake anymore.  Their popularity peaked around the release of their 2010 album The Courage of Others band as far as most Atlantans were concerned.  Maybe they’re big in Texas, where they’re from. They first made their mark in Europe, signing with a European record label, and playing Wintercase in Italy, End of the Road Festival in England,...

Boat Basin
Just heard about these folks like 20 sec. ago.  I really dig the sound.  Kind of like Pavement mixed with The Sea and Cake.  They’re doing pay what you can on their bandcamp Thanks Hell Hole Entrance for the hot tip on some fresh sounds.  Listen to them either at the links above or here.

Ben Jamin
So my homey Jordan just hit me up to play some drums with this band called Hyperfauna.  I’ve been playing drums for like a year total, and I’ve only ever lived with a kit for a couple of months really, but damn if I’m hard pressed to think of a more fun way to spend my time.  The show is at Party Expo in Brooklyn on Feb. 9. Y’all come down now y’hear!

I imagine that I’m ridiculously late to the party when it comes to this part-Cherokee, part-Atlanta rapper, but I can’t stop listening to this song.  My friend Corey prefers this one with Big KRIT. Honestly the hardest part of listening to him has been reminding me that I’m not listening to Mickey Avalon.

Respect Where It's Due
A lot a lot a lot of people have music blogs.  Most of them are better than mine.  The most popular are probably Pitchfork and Stereogum.  I’ve spent my time on a good many of them, such as Les Enfants Terrible, 20 Jazz Funk Greats, and Et Musique Pour Tous. I also have a special place in my heart for the king of Atlanta blogs Ohm Park and the 400 pound gorilla of NYC, Brooklyn Vegan. ...

My friend Brett’s band Fun Land Super Quest made the music for this cutesy pro-vegan puppet show.

Jamz n' Gemz
So today I just got my vinyl-to-mp3 turntable in that will convert all of my records into data.  A few of them are rare, haven’t been made into CDs, or are hard to find online as an mp3.  I think the first one will be Zoltan Kodaly’s String Quartets 1 & 2.  There is a CD of it that you can buy on amazon for $18, but I can’t find them on youtube or isohunt, so that seems...

A little secret
I’ve been sitting with this website in my back pocket for a little while now.  Nodata.tv is pretty phenomenal when it comes to leaks.  Over the last few days I’ve copped the new 7” from Yuck, a remaster of Kraftwerk’s Computer world, and the latest installment of Madlib’s Medicine Show series.  Clearly there’s something here for everyone. It would be a fun...

Fit for a King
Last year I made it down to the King Center for the morning of the holiday. Cornell West was gave a speech, Atlanta’s recently sworn in Mayor, Kasim Reed was riding a wave of goodwill just having won a tense race against Mary Norwood. In fact, Reed won the mayoral runoff election by about 700 votes after trailing Norwood in the general election by more than 7,000. Imagine if MLK ran for...

Acid Jazz
Like many of you, I enjoy making playlists.  I also like the paintings of Mark Rothko, such as the one to the left.  On itunes I keep a good running list of different mixes for different moods and occasions, everything from Africa to retro dance music to one that I just call CHZ’n.  Making playlists is easy and fun, just like making your own Rothko painting. I though that I’d share...

Atlanta, welcome to the playoffs
“You mean you just stand around and drink for 8 hours?” I walk into the Falcons tailgate with mixed feelings. It’s fun to share in everyone’s enthusiasm, but it would be nice to stand with New York tomorrow instead.  Listening to a bunch of vinyl.  I also copped a sweet turntable yesterday.  My giant stacks are taking up too much of the jealously guarded floor space to not...

Top 10 Remixes of the Year
So this is where my hearts at in 2011, the remix. I’ve written this blog post twice already and I had a beautiul intro that developed the history of the remix and my relationship to it, but I keep accidentally deleted it. Now I’ve learned my lesson, always write things in Word first. Word. This was a big year for the remix though, the bloghouse phenomenon has now simply been the...

Top 10 Songs of 2010
OK, so like I said, the album format is kinda dead, so here I go with what really matters, the music itself, the songs!  With Drake waiting 2 years to drop an official album, and Nicki Minaj getting, “50K for a verse, no album out!” who cares about filling up a CD with 50-70 minutes of music, when you can just string together a few bangers over the...

Gnocchi - The place, the music
I love my apartment. I can walk to school in under 30 minutes, there are about a dozen train lines within a 10 minute walk, and the rent is stupid cheap. Technically my neighborhood is known as Nolita, as in Northern Little Italy (or north of little italy), I think that my building merits the craigslist recognized qualification of “Nolita/Bowery” as I’m one block from the...

Top 10 Albums of 2010
So a good friend and musician (see New Animal) who is finally getting his shit together and putting some good music up for sale on BandCamp sent me an email the other day. It went something like this: Name your top 10 albums of 2010…go! So These are the albums that I listened to the most last year.  Though I feel like the album format is kinda dead.  Beach House - Teen Dream Big Boi -...
